You noticed the crack in your driveway a few months back. It looked small then. Now you're not sure if it's grown or if you've just been staring at it longer.
Start with something most homeowners never hear from their contractor: concrete is going to crack. That's not a defect. It shrinks as it cures and it moves with temperature. The question was never whether it cracks. The question is whether somebody decided where it will crack.
Why joints matter more than the crack itself
Expansion and control joints are the grooves formed into the slab. They give the concrete a weak line to break along, so the crack goes where it was planned instead of wandering across the middle of your driveway.
When they're done right, you barely notice cracking at all, because it's hiding in a straight line that looks intentional. When they're skipped, cut too shallow, or spaced too far apart, the slab picks its own spot. That's where the ugly random crack comes from.

Thin cracks that showed up in the first year, run fairly straight, and sit flush across the surface are typically shrinkage. Run your hand over it. If both sides are level and the gap is thinner than a credit card, you're looking at cosmetic aging.

Often times that usually traces back to the lot. A lot of homes in Pickens County sit on ground that was cut into a slope and built back up with fill dirt on the low side. If that fill wasn't compacted properly, it keeps settling for years and the slab loses its support. Drainage does the same thing slower, water running toward the slab instead of away from it pulls base material out from under the edges. It shows up first near the garage apron or the low corner of a patio.

What to do next
Take a photo with something in it for scale — a quarter, a tape measure. Take another from the same spot a few months later. If nothing moved, keep an eye on it. If it's opening or dropping, get somebody out before replacement is the only option left.
